Biography:
Dr. Min received his M.D. from SUMS in 1956. Between 1956 to
1961, he worked for the Second Affiliated Hospital, SUMS as a
resident and doctor in charge in the ENT department. Since 1961 to
1989 turned to the Cancer Center as a lecturer, associate professor,
and professor. In this period, Dr. Min took part in the clinical and
epidemio-
logical survey on cancer, especially on nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC).
In seventies, Dr. Min, as a member of the organizing committee,
participated the retrospective investigation on the canses of tumor
death in Guangdong province, also in 1977 to 1978 cooperating with
the research workers of Guangsi, Hunan, Fujian, Jiangxi provinces
analyzed geographical distribution of NPC in south China.
Comparative risk areas of NPC were showed by these studies.
Dynamical observation in Guangzhou city during the years of 1972 to
1987 was obtained. This data revealed that the incidence rate, age
peak,
sex predilection, histopathological type constitution were
fluctuated slightly and the etiological factors of NPC might be
stable in nature for a long time. Meanwhile, some case-control
studies had been completed. Since 1964, various clinical trials of
chemotherapy for advanced NPC had been applied, including
intravenous and intra-arterial perfusion of various chemotherapuetic
drugs. Multiple modality combination therapeutic strategy was also
been explored under the charge of Dr. Min, including the combination
of radiotherapy, surgery, and Chinese herbal drugs. A new clinical
staging of NPC (named '92 NPC staging) is proposed by Dr. Min et al
and is widely used in China. Presently, some key research projects
are being conducted: 1. A study on optimal comprehensive treatment
modality for NPC; 2. Determination of precancerous status and early
detection of high risk individuals for NPC; 3. A comparison study on
NPC between Southern and Northern China.
