Being one of the eight key disciplines of our university, the research on oncology was appraised last year by the national experts and regarded to the national standards. We now pay much attention to five points: NPC research, comprehensive treatment of liver cancer, anti-cancer gene therapy, establishment of community cancer registry network.
NPC research and comprehensive treatment of liver cancer have been being emphasized as the key work since the foundation of the center. In the past 38 years, comprehensive and thorough study and investigation have been made on NPC in the aspects of epidemiology, etiology, pathology, relation of EB virus and NPC, genetics, etc.. The researchers worked on screening, moni-toring and follow-up investigation in the high risk areas of Sihui, Zhongshan cities for more than 15 years. In addition, they made a study on oyster, seeds of Chinese small iris, radix notoginseng and other Chinese herbs and Chinese traditional medicine.The achievement they made has drawn the attention of the colleagues in China and abroad.
With molecular biology and techniques of gene engineering introduced from abroad, NPC research has been opened up to a new field. Applying these modern techniques to NPC research will certainly make the research a big leap forward. The project of "Clone of NPC Susceptible Gene" led by Professor Yi-xin Zeng has been supported by "National 863 Program of High and New Technology" and "National 793 Climbing Program", showing how highly the government valued this work. Since the year of 1981,the center has been succesively undertaking the projects of the 6th,7th, 8th and 9th National Five-year Plans on NPC research, and the project of the 9th National Five-year Plan on combined treatment for liver cancer, funded by the country and CMB ( Chinese Medical Board in US) foundation. NPC research has brought about achievements in many ways. Being one of the achieve- ments during the period of the 8th National Five-year Plan, the "Clinical Staging System for NPC (1992)" has now been recommended for application and issemination all over the country. More than 100 other projects of scientific research in the center have been rewarded by Guangdong provincial government, the Ministry of Health, and the country.
Since 1983, the Department of Medical Oncology has been the "Ministrial Base for Clinical Trial of Anti-cancer New Drugs ", now it has been brought into a state program during the period of the 9th National Five-year Plan to build into the "National Clinical Research Center of Anti-cancer New Drugs".
